Matt Sheehan


Matt has been actively involved in natural resource management for the past 18 years. He has expertise in coastal and estuarine management and biosecurity and threatened species policy and management Australia-wide.

Matt has worked within the public and private sectors, as well as for NGOs and research institutes. Over the past 10 year he has held national coordination roles where he has worked extensively with local, state and national governments, community groups and industry. He has established extensive networks in NRM across Australia.

Matt is passionate about improving how natural resource management issues are communicated. He works tirelessly to ensure consultation process are meaningful, so that participants feel empowered, take ownership of the issue and are motivated to work collectively towards a common outcome. Matt enjoys being the conduit between policy makers, researchers and land managers, ensuring that the needs and expertise of each party is communicated and used to make strategic decisions which will lead to the best possible outcomes.

Matt holds a Bachelor of Applied Science from LaTrobe University and a PhD from the University of Tasmania.

His skills include:

Shauna Potter

Principal Consultant

Shauna has worked in the natural resource management sector for nearly 20 years. Her focus has been on ecological restoration and revegetation, policy, invasive species management and monitoring and evaluation for major programs.

She has experience in both the public and private sectors, including local, state and national government, and has also worked extensively with community groups and industry.

Shauna enjoys working with people to identify and solve problems, improve processes, evaluate achievements and communicate outcomes.

Throughout her career Shauna has been involved in volunteering and has a deep respect for the work of community groups in the social and environmental sectors.

Shauna holds a Bachelor of Applied Science from the University of South Australia and is located in Adelaide. Her skills include:

National weed coordination and capability services

John is widely recognised as a national leader in weed management and has recently joined the team at Wild Matters following a 26 year career in state government biosecurity programs. John was South Australia’s Senior Weed Ecologist from 1995 to 2009 and subsequently Manager Invasive Species (2009-2016) and thence General Manager Strategy, Policy and Invasive Species to 2021. He has also acted as Executive Director Biosecurity on multiple occasions, most recently from February to July 2021.

Dr Virtue has a Bachelor of Agricultural Science (1st Class Honours and University Medal) and a Doctor of Philosophy in Agriculture that focused on weed management. As Senior Weed Ecologist he worked across diverse fields including environmental weed impacts, parasitic plants, biological control, herbicidal control and germination ecology. He has been a scientific leader in the Centre for Invasive Species Solutions and three Cooperative Research Centres. He has co-supervised PhD and Masters students and have co-authored 22 scientific journal papers, 2 books, 3 book chapters and 35 conference papers.

Johns expertise and interests include:

  • Weed risk assessment for government and industry decision-making on invasive plant management
  • Initiating and leading national collaborations in tackling biosecurity challenges
  • Strategic planning, prioritisation and technical advice in managing invasive species
